I strip aesthetic embellishment from Christian semiotics, forcing an encounter with foundational beliefs outside the rhetoric of spectacle. Drawing on Simone Weil's understanding of attention as a form of prayer, I believe sculpture is a devotional (though not necessarily theistically devotional) labor. Through it, I examine how early religious education acts as a framework for childhood indoctrination, tracking the lasting impacts of a Catholic upbringing on the development (and inhibition) of personhood.
